Abstract:

Contains 136 letters, dated 1852 to 1897, to Celestin Hyacinthe Adnet's mother and family in France. The first is written from Le Havre, the second aboard the Magellan, and the remainder from California gold field towns, including Happy Valley, San Andreas, Mokelumne Hill, Mountain Ranch (El Dorado), Calaveras County, Ranch, and Blue Mountain. Adnet describes his life in America and conditions in the gold fields, his work as a miner, farmer, and wine-maker, and his health, friends, and animals. He also discusses the weather and scenery, American politics, and Americans in general. Also includes 3 letters (1831, 1833, 1836) written by Adnet as a child to his grandparents.

Note:

Celestin Hyacinthe Adnet immigrated to America from France in 1852 at the age of 17. He arrived in the California gold fields in 1856, and continued to live there for the rest of his life.
